So, I was thinking. Everybody has that one fic that hits them right between the eyes, right? Or maybe they have one per fandom, or whatever. But it's that one piece that leaves you breathless with how absolutely amazing it is, and ensures that whenever you think of that fandom, that fic pops up. I was reading daybreak777
's recs, and one of her lists is that of the best fic of 2009 -- the stuff that blew her mind, made her laugh or cry and so on; and I got to thinking about the fic that's done that for me throughout all my years of reading it, so I thought I'd make a note. Be warned; this will probably be updated semi-regularly as I think of more to add.
For my many many other recs, check out my delicious
-- it's all categorised by fandom, genre, pairing, status, word count author and so on.
1) For American Idol 8
, it absolutely has got to be Future Legend
, a truly amazing post-apocalyptic piece from Kris' POV.
And (this is) not a statement
, the first on this list of her utterly beautiful pieces of art, wherein she charts Adam and Kris' wonderfully changing relationship a few years post-Idol. What I love about it more than anything (aside from her truly amazing writing style, and way of capturing the reader's attention absolutely -- she's one of those authors whose books/stories you can never put down), is that almost all interaction takes place primarily between Kris and Adam, from Adam's POV, and every single moment is just perfect. I really can't describe it more than that. The banter, their comfort with one another, emotionally and physically, just... everything. Read. It.
2) For Battlestar Galactica
, an extremely well-written piece where one of the key characters is in fact a Cylon --
I'm pretty sure this was written before any revelations about there being a Final Five.
3) For Chronicles of Narnia
, all stories written by elecktrum
, particularly Black Dwarfs, Blue River
, And So the End Begins
, They Also Serve
and Into the West
. i love each story for the author's portrayal of the brothers' relationship.
Also, everything written by Sentimental Star
, in particular Keeping the Faith
, Nighttime Demons
, Those Who Speak
. Again, I enjoy these stories because of the brothers' relationship.
4) For crossovers -- Doctor Who/Merlin
, Endless Midnights
, a beautifully poignant little reincarnation fic.Dresden Files/Merlin
, The Once And Future Pain In My Ass
, wherein Harry gets an unexpected visitor.HP/LOTR
, Little Harry and the Mirkwood Adventure
. Very very cute!HP/LOTR
, The Black Wizard
. I love how well this author characterises Harry.Merlin/Torchwood
, Once and Future
, a story spanning 5000 years, with five meetings between Jack Harkness and Merlin.SGA/SPN
, And All the World Beneath
, truly, amazingly moving and beautiful.
5) For Harry Potter
, Black Truth
, a magical-creature's-mate fic that is very well and emotively written. I found the whole piece realistic and moving.Faith
. This piece is truly amazing -- the depth of Harry's commitment and the descriptions of his developing abilities and relationships were truly beautiful.Judicamentum
. I loved the emotion in this story -- in fact, everything this author has written is worth looking at. S/he writes almost every slash Harry Potter pairing under the sun, and is capable of creating extremely poignant stories.
The Smallest Stars by lostgirl. It's been a while since I've read this one, but I still remember that it made me cry. Extremely poignant. Unfortunately it no longers appears to be on FF.Net, and i have no idea where to find it... *pout*
Absolutely everything written by Lomonaaeren
. Trust me.Lightning on the Wave
's beautiful, intense revamping of the whole series. Be prepared for a long read -- the shortest book is 79,220 words and the longest 770,717.
6) For Merlin (BBC)
, Crown of the Summer Court
, a great great Merlin coming-of-age story. Brilliant!Job Orientation
, a cute post-Uther fic wherein Merlin is seriously questioning his place in Arthur's life and Arthur is exceedingly frustrated.Tintagel
. An absolutely beautful take on what happened before Arthur was born, though, by it's very nature, it has a great deal of the boys.
And, The Second Time Around
, a so far incomplete sort-of reincarnation fic -- in that Merlin is killed too early and thus reincarnated at the beginning of Arthur's reign. While His Name is Still Spoken
, a beautiful reincarnation, and yet not, fic.
7) For Star Trek 2009/Reboot
, a bonding/connection Kirk/Spock fic, How High the Moon
.Make Myself Believe
, a sad mpreg fic with a great deal of angst.Only Good For Legends
. This is, at the moment, incomplete, but it's absolutely worth reading right now -- it's Kirk/Spock, and AU where Sarek died when Spock was young and, as a result, he and Amanda have lived on Earth for most of his life, and Spock is a detective! It's brilliant, and thought-provoking, and amazingly written.
The beautiful So Wise We Grow
, where Spock inherits a fully Vulcan child from T'Pring and he and Jim raise him together.Starstruck
, a great set of de-aging fics. The connection between Kirk and Spock here is just brilliant! You'll Get There in the End (It Just Takes A While)
, an absolutely brilliant and unique take on a Pon Farr fic.
8) So, for Stargate Atlantis
, it has to be The Body Holographic
by Leah and Springwoof. It's a McShep piece, and is so perfect and beautiful that I really can't describe it -- you have to go read it.
Calling Down the Lightning by dreamwaffles
, an AU magical fic. I can't, unfortunately, give you the link, as the big bang website is down at the moment.
And The Sweep of Easy Wind by blackchaps
, a beautifully written slavery AU. Same applies as the story above concerning the link.
And everything written by lavvyan
, particularly Two Years After Tomorrow
, Same Old Dance
, Incorporating A Few Slight Adjustments
, But Never the Nights
and An SGA Fairy-Tale
9) For Supernatural
, for some reason this little piece, I Can't Trace Time
, just touched me very deeply. I felt the author captured the personalities of all three Winchester brothers perfectly, and it broke my heart. Suite Verse
, of course; it's so horrifyingly wonderful. I don't know about anyone else, but I find myself torn the entire time between wishing Dean would just give in and hoping he'll be rescued, especially with the events of the latest installment.
Another of leonidaslion
's stories, The Fetters of Fenrir
, a kind of animal spirit fic involving a deep connection between Sam and Dean. It's beautifully written, as per usual with this author, and extremely moving.
10) For Supernatural RPS
, it has to be The Doors of Time
, which is so amazing and beautiful that I'm pretty sure I cried at some point. Two-Spirits
, a historical AU based during the time the US is known as the New World -- Jensen and Jared are, for lack of a better word, adopted by a Native American tribe. Very very good.
And Veterans of the Psychic Wars
, an AU set in post-apocalyse, alien-invaded Earth.
11) For Transformers
, a future fic on a newly-restored Cybertron.
, an extremely sad little piece.
Right, so that's it.... I'm tired now. Bed!

AO3 is <3
I'm jumping on the bandwagon!Dear everyone involved with the Archive of Our Own,
Thank you to everyone who's ever written a line of code, fixed a bug, wrangled a tag, answered a support ticket.
Thank you to the back-end coders and thank you to the front-end coders.
Thank you to everyone who's ever brainstormed about what the archive might do, and thank you to everyone who's poured their hearts, souls, and spare time into trying to make the archive do all of those things and more.
I use the AO3 every day. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for building it for me and for everyone who uses it -- and for everyone who doesn't use it yet but might use it someday.
This archive isn't something to which fandom is entitled. It's a labor of love. You make the archive as your gift to fandom, and I appreciate that gift so, so much.
Even though it isn't finished yet. Even though it isn't perfect yet. It's still awesome, and your hard work is tremendous and admirable, and I just want to say thanks.
(Dear everyone else: if anything in this post resonates with you, feel free to signal-boost or repost.)
What's the first major news event that you remember hearing about as a child? Where did you learn about it? How did it impact your world view?
That would have to be Princess Diana's death in 1997. I remember sitting in the lounge watching the news about it on the TV, and it was on absolutely every channel (though we only had four at the time!).

Oh my God, I'm in love with Glee!
Wow, has it been a busy Christmas holiday... Not only have I been working, but also studying, shopping for Christmas presents, going to Christmas parties, having lots of guests over... Surely Christmas is not supposed to be such hard work? Oh, who am I kidding! I know full well that Christmas is, and always has been, bloody hard work!
So I've recently discovered Glee -- the show doesn't actually start for about a week, but I've seen the adverts, so I've done my research, and jerakeen
has recommended at least one Glee fic in the recent past, so I'm already stuck in with the fic, I just have to watch the show.
Also, right now I'm watching my new copy of Wall-E... god, I love this film!
And who else has seen Avatar? Who else absolutely loved it? I thought it was out of this world! I've already seen it twice and definitely plan to see it again!
God, I'm tired.....

TV Show Meme
List 10 TV shows you like, in no specific order. Do this before reading the questions below.
4. Criminal Minds
6. Battlestar Galactica
7. Stargate Atlantis
8. Doctor Who
10. American Idol
1) - Who's your favourite character in 1? (Merlin)
I’d have to say it’s a toss up between Merlin and Arthur – some episodes I like them both equally, then the next I prefer Merlin because Arthur’s being a particularly giant prat, then the next Arthur because Merlin’s being dense… and so on. You get the picture.
2) - What's your favourite ship in 2? (Dollhouse)
Huh, I don’t actually have a ship… no, wait, I kinda do. I think it has to be Topher/Echo. If you guys have ever seen Dollhouse you’ll understand why it’s so difficult to actually have a ship in this fandom, but I really like the way Topher starts to connect with Echo towards the end of the first season (please let there be more!).
3) - What ship can't you stand in 8? (Doctor Who)
Absolutely cannot stand Ten/Martha; it’s just far too fricking cliché.
4) - What first drew you into 6? (Battlestar Galactica)
Well, my brother and father watched it an awful lot, but it was always showing during autumn, which was when I started university, therefore I didn’t have Sky. But one day, whilst I was at home for Christmas, I just sat down with my brother and started watching it – it was 3x16, “Dirty Hands”, wherein there’s all sorts of interesting political stuff going on. It made me realise that there was far more to the show than I had previously thought… thus, I went back and watched it all.
5) - Something that you loved about 3? (Eureka)
Oh God, everything! I love the quirkiness of the whole concept, and the ridiculous science, and the silly plots, and every single character. (Actually I hate one thing; they kill off one of my favourite characters in the third season…. Grrrr!)
6) - Something that you hated about 5? (Supernatural)
Hmmm, nothing really. I’d just like to see a tiny bit more emotional interaction between the brothers; which I know is never going to happen. Plus, if it actually did, I don’t think I’d enjoy it at all. The boys’ relationship works in the show as it is. (This is all on the basic of the first 2 ½ seasons, as I have yet to see the rest…)
7) - Favourite episode in 7? (Stargate Atlantis)
I have lots, but I’ll narrow it down to one: got to be 5x6 “The Shrine”, where Rodney is infected by that parasite that presents itself as a disease that the natives call Second Childhood. I love it right from the very beginning, with the team sitting on top of the stargate. I love the interaction, the pacing, I love Rodney’s sister and her take-charge attitude, I love the format of the whole thing. David Hewlett’s acting is superb, and I adore the whole Keller/Rodney interaction, even though I’m such a McShep person it’s untrue.
8) - Who's your favourite character in 9? (NCIS)
Has to be Tony; I absolutely adore him!
9) - What's your favourite ship in 10? (American Idol)
Without a doubt, Kradam, closely followed by Cookleta.
10) - What ship can't you stand in 4? (Criminal Minds)
Uh, nothing really; it’s such a small fandom, that there really isn’t that many that I hate.
11) - What first drew you into 10? (American Idol)
Well, the awesome singing, of course!
12) - Something that you loved about 9? (NCIS)
I love the dynamics of the team; the storylines are getting better and better, but what does it for me, is still the way everyone on the team interacts with each other.
13) - Something that you hated about 7? (Stargate Atlantis)
The fact that it ended!
14) - Favourite episode in 2? (Dollhouse)
Well, I’ve only seen season one, so, I can tell you it’s not 1x13, “Epitaph One”, which is probably most people’s favourite. I, in fact, prefer 1x7, “Echoes”, quite simply because it’s fricking hilarious!
So, anybody out there!
I have three Dreamwidth invite codes, if anyone's interested! Just leave a comment, and we'll go from there -- I'm new to this as well, so I'll be learning how to give them out! Lol!

Hi out there!
So I just thought I'd let people know that I'm on Dreamwidth now as well, just so people don't get a bit worried when my stories start showing up in two places; see, I have a different username on there, as I'm sort of tired of this one. I don't exactly want to change it everywhere though, as that would be such a hassle!
Anyway, on Dreamwidth, I'm 'vikyr', which is Czech for 'skylight', and the journal itself is still called 'Solaris'.
God, where do I start?
I mean. I just. I don't. I swear, I have panda eyes right now cause my mascara is just everywhere!
I liked it, and I hated it -- God, I loved everybody's performances, I loved Bridget Spears, I loved Lois Abeeba, I loved Rhys, I even loved Gwen.
. And, and Steven
. And poor poor Jack. I don't blame him for running away. And I'm absolutely hating whoever wrote this bloody miniseries right now, because it was bad enough when Owen and Tosh died. How obvious is it that British writers are not fond of happy endings? And how much more punishment is Jack supposed to take in his entire life?
So, he lost his little brother when he was a child in a war. Then, whilst he was a time agent, his memories were erased. So, he was an unscrupulous con artist until he met the Doctor (version 9). Then he was killed by Daleks, and brought back to life permanently by Rose, brought back wrong, and subsequently abandoned by the dying Doctor. He spent a while (read: decades) on Earth waiting for the Doctor, being killed and controlled by Torchwood. He lost friends, he lost lovers, he lost children. During the first season, he made some decsions his team didn't like. He was killed, a lot, by a demon at the end. But he found Ianto. Then he lost Owen and Tosh at the end of the second, but not before he was buried alive for 100 years by his returning brother who hated him for losing him.
Finally, this miniseries: he was blown up by a bomb, buried alive in concrete, lost Ianto, had to kill his own bloody grandson in order to save millions of lives...
Seriously, some writers out there seriously hate this poor character. And I hate them back. I really did think that they wouldn't leave Ianto dead like that. Not after Tosh and Owen. But they did. They did. They killed him. They physically and emotionally tortured Jack to the point where he couldn't see any other option but running away. I mean, my God, they couldn't have found a more decisive way to end the show.
